MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR POLICE OFFICER RECRUITING

Candidates must have the basic qualifications outlined below. These are minimum standards and advancement through the selection process is dependent upon successful completion of each stage. Your qualifications and abilities will be exampled and measured against those of all other applications in the process to judge your overall competitiveness for selection.

Age
• No less than 18 years

Education
• Grade 12
• Applicants with General Equivalency Diploma (GED) for Grade 12 must also have a complete Grade Ten standing
• Applicants should be aware that many candidates have some post secondary education. Preference will be given to applicants with post secondary education

Character
• No criminal record
• Proven history of volunteerism and community involvement
• Good moral character. Recent drug and/or criminal activity will result in deferral
• Good job history (if applicable)

Health and Physical Condition
• Excellent health and physical condition is essential
• Applicants should be prepared to pass a physical abilities test immediately

Visual Activity
• Minimum acceptable acuity is 20/60 in both eyes or 20/40 in one eye and 20/100 in the other
• Eyesight must be correctable to 20/20 or 20/30
• Colour deficiency may exclude a candidate

Citizenship
• Legally entitled to work in Canada

Other Requirements
• Computer skills
• Good command of English language, both written and oral
• A proven history of satisfactory job performance
• Valid driver’s licence
• Good driving record
• Current certificate in Standard First Aid
• Current certificate in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Level “C”
• Associate list of 20 friends and acquaintances complete with addresses and phone numbers

Selection Process for Police Officers

The Estevan Police Service selection process is an open competition, which results in an offer of employment to the best candidates. The usual duration of the process is six to eight months. The following is an outline of the stages in this process.

Stage I Recruitment packages are completed and submitted

Stage II Recruitment packages are reviewed.  Candidates who have never written a mental abilities examination for a police agency write the exam at police headquarters. Candidates must provide photo ID

Stage III List of candidates is identified.  Standard First Aid and CPR Certificates may be checked.

Stage IV Applicants may be asked to take the Peace Officers Physical Abilities Test (POPAT). The test is administered by an independent agency for a fee. Photo ID is required at the time of test.

Stage V Applicants will be required to complete a Lifestyle & Integrity questionnaire. Selected candidates participate in a pre-employment Interview

Stage VI Applicants may be required to take a polygraph exam

Stage VII If selected, applicants are interviewed by the final selection committee

Stage VIII Applicants may be offered employment with the Estevan Police Service on the condition they successfully complete a background/security and medical clearance. At this time copies of birth certificate, health card, and driver’s licence will be required

Stage IX Successful candidates are required to attend and successfully complete training at the Saskatchewan Police College in Regina for a period of 20 weeks

Stage X Successful recruits are field trained by experienced officers for a period of 24 weeks and are on probation for one year before becoming regular members of the Estevan Police Service
